Achieving Successful Digital Transformation With RPA

When it comes to digital transformation, companies are looking to embrace technology to ensure they are able to maximise productivity and increase efficiency with minimal disruption to their workforce. While it sounds pretty simple and straightforward, planning and executing the right digital transformation strategy can be a daunting task.

The key to a successful digital transformation is for businesses to embrace IR4.0 in their journey. And to achieve that, automation is key. It is not about replacing the current workforce entirely with machines. It is about enhancing the workforce with the right technologies to enable them to be more efficient in what they do.


Enter Robotic Process Automation

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) allows organisations to leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate repetitive processes to help their employees become more efficient in what they do. The “robots” in RPA are actually software bots implemented in the systems of businesses but like their counterpart mechanical/physical robots used in manufacturing, these software bots automate processes that are otherwise resource- and time-consuming.

With RPA, processes are run by software robots in physical or virtual machines, carrying out tasks at high speeds with minimal errors. This will further increase the productivity of employees as they will be able to focus more on tasks that need the analysis and perspective of a human. Also, RPA robots work on top of existing applications with no disruption to existing underlying application systems.


Implementing RPA in Your Digitally Transforming Business

As mentioned earlier, RPA robots give better accuracy; they are compliant and consistent, able to reduce risks by reducing/eliminating human errors and work fast, process more and optimise operational costs.

However, many businesses today are not aware of how they can get the most out of RPA. They are sometimes left clueless on how and where they will implement automation among a myriad of processes that are critical for every-day operations.

To ensure successful RPA implementation, first of all, enterprises need to know what processes in their operations are high-volume, business-rules-driven and repeatable, therefore benefitting from automation. That would give them a good idea as to where they can start their automation journey.

Next, businesses should understand the various metrics concerning the process that they will automate. How long does it take for a process to be finished before and after automation? How much will the company save by implementing RPA?

Remember to start slowly, taking one step at a time. It is better to start automating smaller processes that need mundane requirements and then gradually move on to adopt the technology into more significant areas of operations. Businesses should first learn “the how’s” of automation using RPA before fully implementing it throughout their systems. With these ideas in mind and with thoughtful implementation, organisations will see the value of using RPA tools, while increasing adoption and generating ROI quickly.


RPA Will Augment, Not Replace, Your Human Workforce

Probably the biggest concern of utilising RPA is the replacement or removal altogether of employees. However, humans will not lose jobs to RPA. A smart organisation will retain the existing workforce to do higher-value work, more strategic thinking, process improvement and to take up a more consulting role since they are the subject matter expert for that particular task/workflow.

Robots can only do tasks which do not involve human intuitive decision-making. The existing workforce will still be needed to solve issues that require experience and intuition. Robots cannot (yet) interface with humans on an interpersonal communicative level. Humans are needed to do such tasks.

Automating basic workloads is the foundation of digital transformation. For businesses hoping to fully transform and embrace IR4.0, RPA is the best way to start their journey. It may be a simple tool but it can be a powerful tool that improves your efficiency if implemented properly.
