Hosted by Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) at Langkawi International Airport, Malaysian Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had the opportunity to experience a livestream of Malaysia’s first 5G-powered real-time virtual tourism use case.

Powered by 5G’s ultra-reliable low latency and superspeed, Lim was able to witness a real-time 360-degree broadcast of Gunung Machinchang using a VR headset from approximately 500 kilometers away, as part of a tour of Rekascape where the 5G OpenLab by Digi and Cyberview was set up.

Visitors can enjoy the livestream of Gunung Machinchang through the Virtual tourism experience that has been set up at the Langkawi International Airport from a camera mounted at the Langkawi SkyCab middle station. The showcase delivers insights on the possibilities of how 5G can enable next-generation virtual tourism, delivering ultra-high definition and real-time previews of tourist attractions to tourists around the globe wherever they are.

The virtual tourism experience, open to the public until March 2020, was created in collaboration with Malaysia Airports and Panorama Langkawi and is part of Digi’s use case in the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP). The 5GDP showcase in Langkawi is part of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)’s efforts to facilitate, develop and foster 5G use cases in a live but controlled environment.
