A report by IBM and Ponemon Institute suggests that while a malicious attack remains the largest cause of data breaches, human error and system glitches are also quite common

The cost of dealing with data breaches is increasing, and so is the time to detect and contain these breaches.

A data breach is generally defined as a security intrusion in which sensitive and confidential data may be viewed, transmitted, copied or stolen by an individual or an organization, otherwise unauthorized to access that data.

The US, Canada, Germany and France have the highest per capita cost when it comes to data breaches.
